Star Anise<\/h1>\n

Origin and background<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Star anise is a spice obtained from the common star anise tree (Illicium verum<\/i>). The fruits of the star anise tree are star-shaped dark brown pods with a pea-sized seed in each of the eight segments. It is used whole or ground as a spice.<\/p>\n

Star anise comes from southern China and northern Vietnam, where it has been known for over 3,000 years. Today, it is also grown in Cambodia, Laos, Japan, and the Philippines.<\/p>\n

Star anise was brought to Europe by English sailors in the 16th century, when it was used to flavor liqueurs in France, Germany, and Italy. The French chemist Gattefoss\u00e9 (the user of the term aromatherapy) concluded that when essential oils or their ingredients are added to products such as liqueurs, they can reduce the toxicity of alcohol by completely natural means. The star anise was introduced in European cuisine only in the 17th century, when it was used as a tea spice in the Russian court.<\/p>\n

Although the aroma of star anise seeds comes from anethole, or aniseed bean (which also gives the prominent taste to anise seeds), anise and star anise are not biologically related. The similar name derives from their similarity of smell and taste. Although star anise smells exactly like anise, its taste is fuller, more pungent, and more burning.<\/p>\n

The aroma of star anise essential oil is reminiscent of the aroma of black liquorice.<\/p>\n

Using this oil while inhaling in diffusers or inhalers will help relieve the symptoms of bronchitis, cough, runny nose, and flu.<\/p>\n

The aroma of this essential oil helps increase appetite.<\/p>\n

When used in aromatherapy blends with floral or woody essential oils, it helps relieve stress and improve mood.<\/p>\n

The aroma of star anise essential oil will effectively keep small insects away. To repel insects, it is a good idea to use this oil by evaporating or diffusing into the air.<\/p>\n

When used in combination with sweet orange essential oil, it can well remove and mask unpleasant odors.<\/p>\n

Star anise essential oil is used to relieve an upset stomach and flatulence and as a diuretic to excrete excess fluid from the body.<\/p>\n

Supports the cardiovascular system and stimulates blood circulation. Due to its warming effect, it helps relieve rheumatism, arthritis, and muscle pain by reducing pain sensitivity in certain areas.<\/p>\n

Star anise oil has antiseptic properties, providing additional protection in wound care and helping wounds to heal faster.<\/p>\n
