Description

Lemon

Origin and background

The exact origin of lemon tree (Citrus limon) is not known, but is believed to be from the Assam region of north-east India, northern Burma, or China.

Lemon trees were brought to Europe during ancient Rome, near southern Italy, but were not widely grown. A few hundred years later, the plant was introduced to Persia and beyond to Iraq and Egypt. The first written records of lemon come from a treatise on Arab agriculture in the 10th century, where it was described as an ornamental plant. The first lemon farm in Europe was established in Genoa in the middle of the fifteenth century.

Later, Christopher Columbus brought the seeds of the lemon tree to America, the island of Hispaniola, in the 15th century. From there, the Spanish conquests helped to spread the lemon seeds even further.

In the past, lemon was used mainly as an ornamental plant and also as a medicine. The high content of vitamins A, B and C in lemon fruits helped sailors prevent scurvy, eye diseases, and other diseases caused by vitamin deficiencies. It was not until much later that it was used in cooking.

Properties

Aromatic properties

Lemon essential oil traditionally has the aroma of fresh lemon, which has a soothing and uplifting effect, and helps clear the mind.

This oil is refreshing and sharpens the focus, which is why it is often preferred as an air freshener in offices and banks. Also good for use at home to refresh the air and dispel unpleasant odors.

In aromatherapy, adding lemon oil to an aroma diffuser or oil burner helps relieve colds, runny nose, laryngitis, and headaches. Its aroma also helps repel depression, irritation, stress, and fatigue. It lifts the mood and cleanses the senses.

Healing properties

Adding lemon oil to bath water or massage oil relieves digestive problems, lack of energy, fatigue, infections, obesity, rheumatism, arthritis, depression, and stress. It is even used to get rid of a hangover.

It is also used to treat skin problems such as abscesses, hair follicles, furunculs, and acne. It strengthens the immune system and cleanses the body. Like other cold-extracted oils, lemon essential oil can cause photosensitivity and irritate the skin. Therefore, when applying it to the skin, direct sunlight should be avoided for at least 12 hours after use.

Recommended uses

Topical

  • It is recommended to use essential oils and their blend in a diluted form. Especially for sensitive and gentle skin. This means adding a small amount of water or carrier oil before applying it to the skin. The blend can be placed, for example, in a roll-on bottle that is convenient to carry along and can be used at any convenient time.
  • Can also be added to a neutral unscented cream, lotion, or liquid soap to achieve radiant and healthy skin.
Aromatic
  • Can be used in an aroma diffuser both at home or in the office to create a pleasant and cozy atmosphere that relaxes the senses and creates a pleasant aroma around you.
  • It can also be added to an oil burner. Don't forget to add water to the oil burner and then drip in the essential oil! Pure essential oil is too strong and has a faint odor.
  • Can be added to hot bath water and enjoy an aromatic mini-vacation in the middle of everyday life or at the end of a busy week.
  • Combine it with other compatible oils (see recommendations below) in a diffuser or bath water.
  • Can be diluted in the spray bottle with water and spray it at home, in the office, or just to refresh your bed linen.

Compatibility with other essential oils

Fennel, eucalyptus, peppermint, sandalwood, amyris, geranium, ylang ylang.
