Origin and background
Myrrh is a tree resin that has been used since ancient times for its medicinal, cosmetic, aromatic and spiritual properties.
In Christianity, gold, frankincense, and myrrh were gifts that three wise men (kings) gave to the baby Jesus. Gold was the symbol of the kingdom on earth, frankincense (tree of Boswellia) as a symbol of deity, and myrrh (as embalming oil) as a symbol of death.
The ancient Egyptians used myrrh and other essential oils to embalm mummies, because in addition to the pleasant smell, the oils also help the body to decompose more slowly. Researchers attribute this to the bactericidal and microbicidal properties of the oils. By the way, burning both frankincense and myrrh helps reduce airborne bacteria and microbes by up to 68%. Therefore, they were also burned at sacred ceremonies when a larger number of people gathered, because they were believed to have cleansing properties.
Myrrh essential oil is most often used for spiritual purposes and to scent the room.
It is also valued for its contribution to the prevention of good oral hygiene - found in toothpastes, mouthwashes, and other natural oral care products containing myrrh essential oil and / or powdered resin.
Properties
Aromatic properties
The woody, slightly sweet-spicy, earthy, warm aroma of myrrh helps relieve insomnia.
In a spiritual sense, the aroma of this essential oil supports the achievement of magical aspirations.
Healing properties
Myrrh essential oil is one of the most important oils in aromatherapy. It relieves coughs, colds and sore throats, as well as discomfort in the digestive system and strengthens the immune system.
Myrrh essential oil reduces inflammation and relieves pain - headaches, joint and muscle pain. It also helps reduce the discomforts caused by menopause and painful menstruation.
It also promotes healing wounds. This oil is also used as an ingredient in skin care products to reduce fine lines, treat cracks or fungus, and reduce itchy skin.
Myrrh is also considered to be a powerful antioxidant, in other words, it helps fight the harmful effects of the environment causing on our body, thus preventing premature aging and the diseases caused by it. In one tube study , they found that myrrh oil was a more effective antioxidant than vitamin E in the fight against free radicals.
In addition, it helps against halitosis (bad breath) and can also help relieve toothache.
Several other studies are currently underway to look at:
- if adding myrrh oil to sunscreens may enhance the blocking of UV rays (myrrh oil is not given UV protection when used alone),
- if myrrh oil can help kill or slow the growth of cancer cells in the liver, prostate, breast, and skin (in vitro studies have been positive but have not been tested in humans),
- if myrrh oil can help destroy mold (both on damp walls and food).
Recommended uses
Topical
- It is recommended to use essential oils and their blend in a diluted form. Especially for sensitive and gentle skin. This means adding a small amount of water or carrier oil before applying it to the skin. The blend can be placed, for example, in a roll-on bottle that is convenient to carry along and can be used at any convenient time.
- Can also be added to a neutral unscented cream, lotion, or liquid soap to achieve radiant and healthy skin.
- Can be used in an aroma diffuser both at home or in the office to create a pleasant and cozy atmosphere that relaxes the senses and creates a pleasant aroma around you.
- It can also be added to an oil burner. Don't forget to add water to the oil burner and then drip in the essential oil! Pure essential oil is too strong and has a faint odor.
- Can be added to hot bath water and enjoy an aromatic mini-vacation in the middle of everyday life or at the end of a busy week.
- Combine it with other compatible oils (see recommendations below) in a diffuser or bath water.
- Can be diluted in the spray bottle with water and spray it at home, in the office, or just to refresh your bed linen.

Spicy, citrusy and floral oils, especially frankincense, lemon, lavender, sandalwood.
