Origin and background
Peppermint essential oil is obtained from the plant Mentha piperita by steam distillation of its leaves. Peppermint originates in the Mediterranean, but is now grown in various European, American, and Asian countries.
It has been historically proven that peppermint has been used since ancient times in ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, as well as in China and Japan. A legend in Greek mythology tells us that the peppermint plant originated from a nymph called Mentha, who was turned into peppermint by his lover's wife Persephone in a deep rage. According to the ancient Roman writer and historian Pliny, peppermint was also used in celebrations in ancient Greece and Rome.
Peppermint has been used in England for medical reasons for at least the last few centuries.
Properties
Aromatic properties
Peppermint oil is a natural stimulant. It increases the ability to concentrate and helps combat mental fatigue and stress. Its minty and fresh aroma also helps recharge the body and mind with new energy and increase the overall energy level.
For example, it can be used during a refreshing morning shower ritual. For this, you can make a separate so-called rinsing liquid by adding a 2-3 drops of peppermint oil to a combination of freshly squeezed lemon juice of one lemon, and mineral water. The prepared mixture should be applied to the body with a sponge and then simply rinse yourself with water and pat the body dry with a towel. A refreshing and energetic start to the morning!
Peppermint essential oil is also an excellent mood enhancer. Helps relieve anxiety and depression, lifts mood and dispels sadness. It also stimulates the senses and increases mental capacity and creates a sense of happiness. It is for these reasons that peppermint oil is suitable for use in case of exhaustion and slight irritation. Apply a few drops of oil (diluted with a carrier oil) to your senses or add it to an aroma diffuser or oil burner and allow its cooling aroma to dispel your worries.
PEppermint oil is also a great repellent to mosquitoes and other insects.
Healing properties
Peppermint essential oil is a good helper for ailments such as asthma, colic, fever, bloating, allergies, nausea, and dizziness. Due to its menthol content, it has a refreshing and stimulating effect and is excellent against mental fatigue and depression.
The oil has a good effect on the skin - after applying, it helps relieve itching and sunburn, and soothes inflamed skin. It also helps relieve muscle pain and headaches.
Rinsing the mouth with the water-diluted oil (do not swallow!) helps against bad breath and helps fight gingivitis. It is said to even help you lose weight.
Recommended uses
Topical
- It is recommended to use essential oils and their blend in a diluted form. Especially for sensitive and gentle skin. This means adding a small amount of water or carrier oil before applying it to the skin. The blend can be placed, for example, in a roll-on bottle that is convenient to carry along and can be used at any convenient time.
- Can also be added to a neutral unscented cream, lotion, or liquid soap to achieve radiant and healthy skin.
- Can be used in an aroma diffuser both at home or in the office to create a pleasant and cozy atmosphere that relaxes the senses and creates a pleasant aroma around you.
- It can also be added to an oil burner. Don't forget to add water to the oil burner and then drip in the essential oil! Pure essential oil is too strong and has a faint odor.
- Can be added to hot bath water and enjoy an aromatic mini-vacation in the middle of everyday life or at the end of a busy week.
- Combine it with other compatible oils (see recommendations below) in a diffuser or bath water.
- Can be diluted in the spray bottle with water and spray it at home, in the office, or just to refresh your bed linen.
Compatibility with other essential oils
