Description
Spearmint
Origin and background
Spearmint is a perennial herbacious plant and a species of mint, with a natural distribution in Europe and Asia. With the help of man, spearmint has spread and taken root in North and West Africa and America. It is also used to flavor food and is a common ingredient in herbal teas.
Spearmint has been mentioned for the first time since at least the 1st century AD by the naturalist Pliny, and references to it also appear in biblical texts. Further descriptions come from ancient mythology. In the 14th century, references were found to the use of spearmint in original toothpastes, suggesting that by that time the plant was already widespread in households.
The mint was brought to England by the Romans in the 5th century, and Turner, the "father of British botany" who lived in the 16th century, mentions spearmint as a useful plant for the stomach. Also in the herbal book of the English botanist John Gerard, who lived in the 16th century, it is said to be useful for watering the eyes and for any head and ulcer disease. It was also described to be helpful with wasp and bee stings and was also used to treat the bite of evil dogs.
Historically, during the American Revolution, spearmint was an important source of income in Connecticut, where peppermint and spearmint tea was a popular beverage because it was not taxed.

- Can also be added to a neutral unscented cream, lotion, or liquid soap to achieve radiant and healthy skin.
