Description

Ylang Ylang

Origin and background

Ylang ylang essential oil is steam distilled from the blossoms of the tree Cananga odorata . Cananga odorata is a large tree originating in Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. It grows in the Comoros and Madagascar.

Its beautiful yellow flowers have a strong aroma and long petals. The essential oil made from them is easy to obtain, which is why it is not as expensive as other floral essential oils obtained from flowers and is therefore more widespread. Ylang ylang is widely used in the perfume and cosmetics industry due to its stomach-spicy tropical floral scent, and today it is also common in the food industry. For example, ylang ylang is one of the main components of the world-famous perfume Chanel No 5.

The meaning of ylang ylang comes from the Tagalog word "ilang", which means wild, untouched land. It may also be related to the term "ylang-ilan", which means rare or uncommon.

Traditionally, this plant has been considered an aphrodisiac and its aroma is very relaxing. That is why in Indonesia the blossoms of this tree were sprinkled on the marriage bed of a newly-wed couple.

According to a myth from the Philippines, this beautifully flowered ylang-ylang tree started growing when the beautiful girl Ilang fell in love with a boy she was not allowed to marry. Before they can get together, this girl is turned into a tree (directly in one version, but in another version after her death) and her lover cries behind her, shouting, “Ilang! Ilang! ”.

Wiccatraditions associate ylang ylang with the planet Venus. Ylang ylang is used in love spells and it is claimed that its aroma helps dispel fear and promote self-confidence. Because its scent is soothing and tension-relieving, it is also used in spells that evoke a calm, meditative state. It is also thought to help dispel negative thoughts and emotions. By combining its loving and soothing qualities, ylang ylang also helps promote self-acceptance and self-love.

What is the difference between different ylang ylang oils?

There are five types of Ylang-ylang essential oil: “extra” (extra), “first” (I), “second” (II), “third” (III) and "complete” (complete). The first four are fractionated distillates, which are separated in the order during the flower distillation and according to the temperature. First extra, then I, then II, and finally III.

Ylang ylang extra is separated from the flowers during the first hour or two. Extra is the lightest variant of ylang ylang essential oil, therefore it is also the most volatile and thus the most aromatic distillate of ylang ylang. On the downside, it dissipates very easily on its own, meaning that it is designed to give the first impression of perfumes as a top note, but it lacks permanence.

During the next couple of hours they collect ylang ylang I, which also has very aromatic properties, but not too heavy. During the next few hours from this procedure they collect ylang ylang II and then ylang ylang III. The last two have the heaviest aroma of ylang ylang oils.

As ylang ylang I, II, and III have a slightly lighter density than extra, they are less heat sensitive and less volatile. As a result, they have much more persistent aromas and are suitable for use in perfumery as base or medium notes.

Ylang-ylang complete (complete) is a combination of all four distillates mixed together. This variant of the essential oil can therefore be considered as a stand-alone perfume.
